JACQUES HENRI LARTIGUE II
Life in Colors
"Life in colors by Lartigue" is a wonderful opportunity to discover an unprecedented chapter in the work of the photographer, with only a small part of his colour clichés ever having been shown and the majority of which remain absolutely unknown. The hundred and ten photographs to be exhibited and published shall be, save a few exceptions, a discovery for the public but also for the world of professional photography and critics, and for that of the media in general.
The event also deals with the history of photography since it disrupts the perception currently held of the work of J. H. Lartigue.
The first part is devoted to the early twentieth century as Lartigue used colour since the 1910s, in the form of stereoscopic autochrome plates. At a time when colour was struggling to break out of the experimental stage, as an artist, he showed a keen interest in it, convinced that this would be a step that would bring him closer to reality. "Before, when it was too nice or too lovely a day, I felt a kind of "illness": a mixture of wonder and "desperation”. But this morning I have "autochrome" colour plates. I set up my tripod and my camera facing the great motionless trees in the blue haze, and I´m happy! A feeling of calm..." In the second part, twenty years after his last autochromes, in the early fifties, with his Rolleiflex automat 6x6, Lartigue "reunites" with colour, driven by the same enthusiasm, at a time however, when colour photo shoots were looked upon with disdain or indifference by other great photographers such as Walker Evans and Henri Cartier-Bresson who agree that it is a vulgar process.
Through the choice of colour, J.H. Lartigue confirms the major, pioneering position he occupies in the history of photography. A position also made unique since while he is a photographer, Lartigue was also a painter all his life; a scenario which requires the complementary and conflicting reports that link these two forms of artistic expression to be considered. To accompany the exhibition, a book will be published by Editions du Seuil (in French), reproducing all the photographs in the exhibition. It will be the first reference book on the colours of Lartigue. It will include two texts signed by the curators of the exhibition, the art historian, Martine Ravache and the Director of the Donation JH Lartigue, Martine d´Astier.
